Grandparents – and other extended family members – have long been an important part of the Swain community.
Our founder, D. Esther Swain, established the first Grandparents Day program at an independent school, back in the late 1960’s. Since then it has been an honored tradition at our school; in its current form we offer an early May program that includes classroom visits and presentations, a school-wide program of performances, and the enjoyment of our annual Student Art Show.
Grandparents support our students in many ways – driving to and from school, attending school programs, and some even make it financially possible for their grandchildren to attend Swain. Others are faithful volunteers, stepping up to chair special events, provide leadership for our Annual Fund campaign, and support our Auction and other fund raisers.
In the spring of 2010, the Grandparents Council was formed, to better solicit from, and communicate with this special group of family members. Through their meetings, they share ideas, resources, and enthusiasm for The Swain School. Any grandparent who is interested in participating is welcome - please contact us at
