Mission & Strategic Plan

Swain's Strategic Plan is the result of input from many members of our community, and was approved in March, 2009, to guide our school for the next five years.

Each of these five goals plays a major role in helping us achieve our mission, which was updated in June, 2008.

Our Mission

The Swain School is a vibrant community which inspires students to achieve academic excellence, develop a strong sense of character, and act responsibly in a changing world. We empower children to build confidence, explore knowledge, and work collaboratively in a diverse and safe environment.

Our Goals

Goal I: Educational Excellence

To provide an education of excellence, The Swain School must have an independent school academic program that cultivates the love of learning, stimulates intellectual curiosity with a challenging program, provides outstanding pedagogy, and develops confident learners of empathy in a supportive, diverse, and nurturing environment.

Goal II: Outstanding and Engaged Faculty

Swain must recruit and retain highly qualified, flexible, creative, compassionate and committed faculty who understand independent school education.

Goal III: Financial Stewardship

To secure the financial stability of Swain for current students and future generations, develop an annual budget and a long range plan that derives a greater proportion of its revenues from non-tuition sources, such as planned gifts, annual giving, special events, and capital fund-raising programs.

Goal IV: Maximize Physical Resources

To support all facets of Swain’s program, provide well-designed spaces and physical facilities that will contribute positively to the overall educational experience, maintaining said resources to contribute to Swain’s attractiveness value.

Goal V: Community Commitment

To strengthen ties between the school community and its constituents, build connections among students, parents, alumni, friends, and potential partners in the greater Lehigh Valley community for the benefit of all.

Diversity Statement

The Swain School is an inclusive, equitable, and richly diverse community - reflective of the world at large. We value an open and welcoming intellectual environment that embraces the experiences, cultural beliefs and perspectives of all people.

Vision Statement

The Swain School will be a premier independent school with graduates of outstanding character who are academically prepared and socially responsible. The school will be recognized for a highly qualified and engaged faculty, a diverse and innovative curriculum, a safe campus conducive to learning, and a strong financial foundation. The Swain community will build upon our tradition of academic excellence while emphasizing service to others and a commitment to the global society.
