Visual Arts
Between Kindergarten and fifth grade, students visit with the art specialist weekly, and middle school students have two art classes each week. Meeting consistently throughout the year enables our art program to be comprehensive and offer our children many new experiences.
In addition to the more traditional media of paint, pencil, pen and ink, our students enjoy creating in clay and metal. They design masks, create sculpture from found objects, experience printmaking, and create colorful designs with dye on silk. They produce mosaics and computer-generated design. Field trips to view artwork or trips to locations where sketching opportunities abound are an integral part of the art curriculum.
Much of the art program complements and supports the academic program. So, for example, first-grade artists examine Chinese artifacts, drawing inspiration for their sketches and Chinese scrolls — before enjoying a big bowl of rice with chopsticks, and homemade spring rolls. Eighth graders write personal poetry, which they illustrate with a mask of their own creation.
Annual Art Show
Each student from Kindergarten through eighth grade has at least one work from his or her portfolio entered in the spring show, typically held the first week in May. This incredible showcase features hundreds of unique works, and is viewed by an appreciative audience of families, friends and the general public.
