Mathematics
Swain offers an above-grade-level mathematics program with emphasis on numeracy and on mathematical relationships and order in our environment. Vocabulary and specific terminology are introduced to help students acquire ease in using the language of mathematics. Mathematical reasoning and problem-solving are emphasized as are authentic, hands-on experiences in patterning, sorting, estimation, number sense and numeration, computation, measurement, probability, fractions, two- and three-dimensional geometry, recording results and discussing strategies.
There is a strong emphasis on interactive problem-solving, which is taught through cooperative group activities and through real-life situations that arise. All students leave 8th grade with a solid foundation of Algebra I under their belts.
All math courses are one year above grade level. All students will have completed Algebra I in the 8th grade; some will complete Algebra II.
