The Swain School is unique among independent schools in the emphasis we put on wellness and helping students navigate the physical, mental and emotional challenges of childhood and the early teen years.

Our full-time school nurse is always available to aid our students with health concerns, whether they are scraped knees, colds and flu or more chronic conditions like diabetes or food allergies.

We have a full-time school counselor who meets with students to help reinforce the virtues of our character education program and guides students through emotional challenges, and conflict and crisis management.

Our physical education program gets children moving through games, sports, and special activities like the Halloween obstacle course, our annual Jump Rope for Heart event, and Field Day every spring. These events are not only valued for their exercise component, but also because they bring students of all ages from Kindergarten to eighth grade together, building community and friendships among our student body. Additionally, there is an emphasis on learning basic skills and lifelong activities (like walking, archery, and bowling), with safety in mind at all times.

Swain also has a Wellness Coordinator on staff who teaches Lower- and Middle School students, engaging them in a wide array of topics including everything from the importance of good food and exercise, to building self-esteem and handling conflicting relationships, to understanding the physical, mental and emotional changes associated with puberty.
