Our Sports Philosophy

At Swain all children who wish to play a sport may do so. There are no "tryouts" nor is participation tied to academic excellence. Instead, any student who signs up to play and attends practices is allowed to participate. The result is a sports program that involves no less than 93 percent of our fifth through eighth grade students.

Research reveals strong links between participation in sports and performance in school. It stimulates the students' desires to succeed in other areas and simultaneously teaches that perseverance is important and success is seldom immediate. We observe that the athletic experience infuses students with an achievement-oriented attitude that extends to academics and social situations.
