The Swain CommunityEach year the Swain community honors one of its own with the Trustee Award for Community Service, given in October at our annual Founder's Day assembly. Last year's honoree was former Swain board of trustees president, Nancy Ehle. Reaching Out
Since World War II when Swain students knit socks for the Red Cross and filled them with candy, our educational philosophy has emphasized commitment to community.
Good NeighborsAs part of our broader Character Education program, some of our community service projects include cleaning up local parks, working at a recycling center, making friends at an assisted living center, providing meals for homeless people, conducting food drives, collecting funds for local charities, and raising money for various area organizations. In September, the school rallied to "Adopt a Sculpture", a neglected piece of outdoor artwork located in a nearby City of Allentown park. The Swain community donated over $1200 towards the cost of the recent renovation of "Cube and Thread". The school shares its facilities and programs with the surrounding community in many ways. Over the years, more than twelve different church groups have met for worship on our campus. Regional and local professional groups frequently meet at Swain, and the school also serves as the area's voting precinct. Basketball leagues, sports camps, Brownies and Cub Scouts also use Swain facilities, as do the Da Vinci Center, Junior League, and Kids4Kids programs. |
