Since World War II when Swain students knit socks for the Red Cross and filled them with candy, our educational philosophy has emphasized commitment to community.
We encourage children to realize that they have the power to improve the quality of life in their own communities and for others far away. Throughout the school year, students and their families are involved in projects that benefit both local and international organizations.
Some of our community service projects include cleaning up local parks, working at a recycling center, making friends at an assisted living center, providing meals for homeless people, conducting food drives, collecting funds for local charities, and raising money for the American Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days.
The school shares its facilities and programs with the surrounding community in many ways. Twelve different church groups have met for worship on our campus. Regional and local professional groups frequently meet at Swain, and the school also serves as the area's voting precinct. Karate classes, basketball leagues, Brownies and Cub Scouts also use Swain facilities.
In addition, Swain has designed a special summer enrichment program open to all children in the community: Summers at Swain offers a wide variety of courses, from kitchen science and dancing to sports skills and "making masterpieces." The courses run for two weeks and are available for children from age 3-1/2 to entering fifth grade.
Our Summer Sports Camps and Summer Care (child care) are also open to children in the community.
