Artist Michael Albert shakes it up
One day food salesman Michael Albert looked at an empty cereal box in his hand - and although he would have thrown it away the day before without thinking twice - something called to him to create something unique from it.
That calling has turned into a life as an artist, creating vibrant, explosive pieces from recycled materials. "Have I made an impact on the environment by keeping these cereal boxes and other items from landfills?" he asked Swain students. "I don't think so, but I feel good about the things I've created from them."
With support from the Borgenicht Foundation, Albert was at Swain for a five-day visiting artist-in-residency program with art teachers Barbara Ward and Gail Ortner, during the week of Oct. 3-7. He brought his techniques and inspirations to art students, who get to work up close and personal with a 'real artist'.
The Swain community hosted a special "Meet the Artist" event on Thursday, Oct. 6, in the school's Gateway to Knowledge Community Room, where a selection of his work is on display until December. Students were encouraged to bring their parents to meet Albert, who had postcards and other items to give attendees; his posters, puzzles and other creations were also available for purchase.
Not for sale - but on display - will be the piece he created, inspired by The Swain School, which he displays above with Mrs. Ward.
