Swain community inspired by artist
Collage artist Michael Albert likes to create his own art - and he also likes to inspire others to create their own pieces, or to do the things they love.
"I would love it if someone would tell me to go into my studio full-time," he told the school's middle school students. "We each have the opportunity to determine how we spend our time, and we should do the things we love."
Fifth grade student Marie took Mr. Albert's words to heart, and went home to create her own version of Swain's . The pledge was crafted several years ago by students and is recited weekly by the Swain community - it is an important part of the school's culture.
Working over a period of two days, Marie found all the letters in magazines, cut them out and assembled them on a large board. Here's her finished version, which she displays with Mr. Albert.
Mr. Albert presented Marie with his version of "The Gettysburg Address", which he autographed. As a challenge to himself - 'for fun' - he memorized Lincoln's memorable speech, and recited it to the middle school students. Similarly, he memorized Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and shared it at the Lower School Town Meeting.
Inspired by Mr. Albert's art - and his attitude of learning for his own enjoyment - Head of School, Mr. Stansbery challenged all of the students and faculty/staff to create their own art, or do something because they really love it.
