Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. held "Voices for Justice"
Swain hosted its second annual community celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16, from 9 a.m.-noon.
“A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Day of Remembrance, Celebration and Service” was attended by over 125 area residents, and included age-appropriate educational sessions, discussions, and musical performances.
Congressman Charles W. Dent opened the event at 9 a.m. with welcoming remarks, followed by a presentation by Dr. Saladin Ambar, an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Africana Studies at Lehigh University. The day also included age-appropriate educational sessions to learn more about Dr. King and his works, and musical performances. Performances by Rejoice - the Gospel Choir from Muhlenberg College - and Rev. Gregory Edwards of Resurrected Life Community Church in Allentown, as well as a community sing-along were enjoyed by everyone.
Swain third grader Leland Hargrow, an award-winning orator, presented two King-related speeches: "I am a Proud Black Man" and "Achievement". Both prompted standing ovations from the audience.
“We are proud to offer this event in remembrance of Dr. King,” said Todd P. Stansbery, Swain’s Head of School. “This gives local families an opportunity to learn more about him, as well as to celebrate his life.”
To celebrate the spirit of Dr. King, participants were invited to bring donations of baby items for St. Luke's Nurse-Family Partnership or 'birthday party kit' items such as cake mix, frosting and candles for the Northampton Area Food Bank.
