Swain Technology Center
The Swain School features three technology centers which are located in the Lower School Technology Lab, the Middle School Technology Lab, and the Umansky Library. Each center includes at least 16 Apple computers, which are networked and connected to the Internet. Additional computers are located in every classroom to increase opportunities for integrated learning. Also available for student and faculty use are interactive whiteboards, printers, digital cameras, video cameras, and scanners. All students in kindergarten - grade 8 visit a technology lab and the library on a scheduled weekly basis. Additional time in the centers is often scheduled by teachers for special projects. Students may also request to use the facilities during study halls and after school to help with their homework. Student based technology projects in the lower school offer a wide variety of activities that improve technology skills as well as teach content. Some examples of lower school projects include typing and illustrated original work, creating multimedia slideshow presentations, using digital cameras, graphing, playing educational games, and making cards and booklets. Middle School students expand into activities such as creating spreadsheets, podcasting, desktop publishing and designing websites. Enrichment classes also offer students a chance to use imovie, iphoto, and Garageband, as well as to create digital artwork. Swain strives to keep technology current and relevant to today’s learning styles. |
