The Importance of Strong Beginnings
When Mrs. Swain began her first class in 1929, the concept of early childhood education was a controversial idea. Now we know that a secure environment where very young learners can socialize and build a foundation of thinking skills results in happier, more motivated students all the way through.
The Preschool Program
Preschool at Swain has two levels (Preschool 3 and Preschool 4), each tailored to the abilities of 3- and 4-year-olds respectively. As the children advance through preschool, the program becomes more structured, but flexibility to flow with the children's interests is always encouraged.
Creative play is used to introduce concepts in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. Children also participate in Art, Music, Library Skills, Creative Movement and Computers. Special events abound and frequent field trips supplement the classroom activities.
Scheduling
Flexible scheduling is a hallmark of Swain's Preschool program. Children may attend for full day or half day sessions and for the entire week or a portion of the week. Understanding the complicated logistics of many families, Swain also offers extended care before and after school and during many school holidays and summer.
Faculty
The Preschool is directed by highly trained members of the Swain faculty. The five lead teachers all have bachelor's degrees, and many hold advanced degrees. The five trained assistants ensure that every child receives the attention he or she needs. Class sizes are deliberately kept small for the same reason.
