Under the direction of Veronica Bocian, the 6th-8th grade cast of Mulan presented three performances this past Friday and Saturday.
Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu, she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.
This annual production provides an opportunity for Swain students to utilize the skills they learn and practice in the theatre classes they enjoy as Kindergarten-8th grade students. In addition to the cast of 50, eight additional students are assisting with costumes, choreography and stage management.
